Know the “Rules” for Hanging Picture Frames

Take a look at this simple guide that gives you the basic “rules” for hanging your picture frames.

Have you ever wondered how to hang your picture frame so it actually looks great?

It seems like there are so many rules about how to hang frames, how high to place them on the wall and exactly what styles to use. The truth is that while there are some standards that you can follow for your decorative elements, you should still consider your preferences when you are designing.

Height Measurements

In general, they say that your picture frames should be hung around eye level for an average person. In a large room, this may not seem like it’s high enough. However, the focal point of those hangings should be something you can see standing in front of it.

While you can hang items higher and lower, you are going to want to center the primary focal point of your décor to the proper height. Picture frames should be hung at approximately 57 inches as the general rule.

Location, Location, Location

The height of your hangings is important, but so is the location more generally.  Hang picture frames and other décor where it will look the best in the room.

A great go-to rule for this is to hang frames over or beside furniture. For example, if you are hanging something in the bedroom, try centering it above your headboard.

If you are hanging things in the living room, place art above the couch or a decorative table. You can use this concept throughout the home to create a visually appealing look.

Spacing in Design

When you are hanging multiple items together, spacing can be a bit of a challenge. Before you hang multiple pieces, do some planning so you can get a clear visual and make sure it will look right pieced together.

Use a table or a large space on your floor to put pieces together and create your design. When you are ready, you will then move these items one piece at a time to the wall. There isn’t necessarily a wrong answer for spacing, but you want to create a balance and make spacing consistent. It’s a good idea to measure as you hang to ensure your spacing doesn’t get off.
