How to Hang Frames the Right Way

Hanging anything in a frame can sometimes get complicated. You have to measure, mark, drill and more to create the perfect look for your frames.

Depending on the size and weight of the frame, there are a lot of details to consider. And if you rent your home or you’re cautious about putting holes in the walls, this makes a difference, too.

In this guide, we share some simple tips to help you learn the right way to hang your frames!

Choose the Space

The first step is to choose where you plan to hang your frame. If you are setting up an entire room, the full setup of your décor will be relevant for hanging your frame.

Before you start marking or measuring, scope out the general look you are trying to accomplish. You may not have the exact details figured out until you start marking on the wall, but this will give you a glimpse of the look and help you plan spacing and other important details.

Prepare With the Right Tools

You need to choose the appropriate tools for hanging your art. This should include a tape measure, pencil, hanging supplies, a level and any other markers.

A lot of people have started hanging frames with command strips, but you can also use screws and anchors for heavier items. Choose what works best for your space and the frame that you are hanging.

Measure and Mark

Once you have your layout prepared and your supplies ready, you need to measure where your hangings are going to be and start marking where you will place hanging pieces.

If you are using anchors, mark where you want to place the anchors. If you are using something like Velcro command strips, mark where you want the top of the frame to be placed so you can line up the piece accordingly.

We recommend using a level to help you get your marks straight. You will use your tape measure to help determine where to mark and the placement of your pieces. Don’t just eyeball it, especially if you are hanging multiple pieces together.
